Mei Liu is an interdisciplinary artist originally from Shanghai. Trained in documentary filmmaking and artistic research, her practice is an exercise in world-making, through performance, workshops, collective gatherings, and film. Her works are process-driven, polyphonic, and communal, rooted in the body as a site where the spiritual and the political converge. Guided by questions such as, “What is freedom?” and “What makes us human?,” she employs embodied, testimony-like methodologies, among them lucid dreaming, oral history, and live improvisation and performance. She summons erased histories, disappeared voices, and other ghosts from invisible realms—those repressed, rejected, or forgotten.
Mei is currently developing MY BODY IS A RESONANCE CHAMBER, a project that came to her in a dream in which she swallowed an SD card. Combining performance, collective constellations, and spatial installation, it builds on first-hand encounters and historical research materials to draw out the body’s subterranean memories that language fails to communicate.
Mei co-founded Cenote Workshops in Shanghai and Electric Shadows studio in Amsterdam.
